Pop music, perhaps due to its increasing commercialisation, is often criticized for being entertaining while lacking serious musical value and artistic significance. This is typically attributed by critics to record companies' financial gains being placed above artistic considerations, by hand-picking the artists and songs that will have a broad appeal and maximum profits. Sometimes, in the case of the British pop group Hear'Say, for example, young and fashionable people who have little or no prior knowledge of the music industry are transformed into a band that sells music and related merchandise to a preteen or teenage audience. A consequence of this increasingly common commercialisation is that genres which attain credibility as styles in their own right are often considered ‘independent’ instead of 'pop'. Those musicians, as well as their fans, sometimes strive to separate themselves from the commercial aspect of current pop music.

“Historian Andrew Lambert went on a modern day voyage to Australia, on a replica of Captain Cook’s ship Endeavour. Although those who served on the ship found some elements of this image convincing, they recognised that they should not allow their delicate 21st century sensibilities to cloud their judgement. Their first contact with the alternative world of Captain Cook was the food. A diet of salt meat, hard biscuit and sauerkraut was a shock to them, but their predecessors would have considered it superior to anything available on shore. Every ship’s captain would have ensured the crew was well fed, and kept their dinner time sacred, usually allowing the men 90 minutes to deal with their tough rations. They would only be called from the mess table in an emergency .

The causes of World War II were rooted in the peace
settlement at Versailles in 1919-1920. The peace had
created as many problems as it had solved. The
senior Allied heads of state yielded to demands that
involved annexing German territory and creating new
states out of the eastern European empires. In doing
so, the peacemakers created fresh bitterness and
conflict. The Versailles treaty and its champions,
such as US President Woodrow Wilson, proclaimed
the principle of self-determination for the peoples of
eastern and southern Europe. Yet the new states
created by the treaty crossed ethnic boundaries,
involved political compromises, and frustrated many
of the expectations they had raised. The unsteady
new boundaries would be redrawn by force in the
1930s. The Allied powers also kept up the naval
blockade against Germany after the end of World
War I. This forced the new German government to
accept harsh terms that deprived Germany of its
political power in Europe. The blockade and its
consequences created grievances that made the
