Like other languages, English has changed greatly, albeit imperceptibly, so that an English speaker of 1300 would not have understood the English of 500 nor the English of today. Changes of every sort have taken place concomitantly in the sounds (phonetics), in their distribution (phonemics), and in the grammar (morphology and syntax). ................ The changes are more radical than they appear, for Modern English o and a are diphthongs. The words home, stones, and name exemplify the fate of unaccented vowels, which became e, then e disappeared.

The long-expected decline in the dollar is now well under way. For years economists have predicted that America's huge current-account deficit would eventually cause its currency to plunge. So far the dollar's slide has been fairly gradual: it is down by 13% in trade-weighted terms over the past year, though it has dropped by almost twice as much against the euro since its 2001 peak. As the decline seemed to pick up speed this week, John Snow, George Bush's Treasury Secretary, declared that he favours a 'strong dollar policy'. That was surely the wrong answer, even leaving aside the debatable issue of whether cabinet secretaries can influence the level of exchange tales. A weaker, not a stronger dollar, is what the world needs now - so long as policymakers elsewhere respond appropriately. America promoted a strong dollar throughout the 1990s, when inflation was still thought to be the main enemy. Today it makes less sense. Even after its recent slide, the dollar seems overvalued. Moreover, with ample space capacity in America, deflation looks a bigger risk than inflation.
It is pointed out in the passage that the American policy, in the 1990s, for a strong dollar —.
A) seems less rational now than it did then
B) has proved successful in boosting the economy

In the 1940s DDT was found to be an excellent way to control insects. It cost little to produce and was not found to harm humans. So it was widely used for people and crops. But then it was found that DDT stayed in the environment for many years. It thinned the shells of unborn birds and led to health problems for other animals. So the support for the common use of it was ended. But now again the use of DDT in homes is supported to control malaria, as indoor spraying is useful to quickly reduce the number of infections caused by malaria-carrying mosquitoes. DDT presents no health risk when used correctly. But it should be used only inside houses and huts, not outside and not for agriculture use. Malaria sickens five hundred million people and results in more than one million deaths every year. Each day, an estimated three thousand babies and young children die from it. The large majority of deaths are in Africa, south of the Sahara. But critics of DDT argue that DDT is not as effective as people might think. For instance, some African mosquitoes have already developed resistance to it. It seems that DDT should be only one tool among many for insect control.
According to the passage, one advantage of DDT was thought to be its ----.

In many ways, Hollywood seems to exemplify the most joyless aspects of capitalism. The 'industry', as it insists upon calling itself, packages artistic ideas and images as commodities and then values those commodities according to how they 'penetrate' markets. The system's worrying inefficiency, of course, is that studios never know what the public at large will want to buy. So films are tested in front of preview audiences, revised according to the audience's suggestions, tested again, and then marketed with a vigour directly proportionate to the test scores. There are two problems with this approach. The first is that the test-sample size is minimal but can determine a film's fate. The second is that by the time the test audience sees a film it's too late to change it very much anyway, particularly when twenty, fifty or a hundred million dollars has already been spent.
One point made in the passage about test audiences is that they----.
A) seldom have any real understanding of artistic values
B) add to the expenses of film-making
C) rarely have any constructive criticism to make
D) are ignorant of the Hollywood techniques of film making
E) are too small to be truly representative of the general public

Most American plays of the 18th and 19th centuries strongly reflected British influence. In fact, no New York City theatre season presented more American plays than British plays until 1910. The reasons behind this phenomenon are complex, but a common language and the ready availability of British plays and British actors offer the most obvious explanation. Although the British repertory dominated the American stage for so long, American drama had begun to diverge from British drama by the time of Andrew Jackson’s presidency, from 1828 to 1836. British plays, which typically reflected the attitudes and manners of the upper classes, were by then in conflict with more egalitarian American values. Despite this growing divergence, British actors, theatre managers, and plays continued to cross the Atlantic Ocean with regularity, and most American plays copied British models until the early 20th century. For this reason some critics claim that American drama was not born until the end of World War I (1914-1918).By the end of the 19th century American drama was moving steadily toward realism, illuminating the rough or seamy side of life and creating more believable characters. Realism remained the dominant trend of the 20th century in both comedies and tragedies. American drama achieved international recognition with the psychological realism of plays by Eugene O’Neill and their searing investigation of characters’ inner lives. As the century advanced, the number of topics considered suitable for drama broadened to encompass race, gender, sexuality, and death.

In the early part of the twentieth century, the experiments carried out by Ernest Rutherford and his colleagues led to the idea that at the centre of an atom there is a tiny but massive nucleus. At the same time that the quantum theory was being developed and that scientists were attempting to understand the structure of the atom and its electrons, investigations into the nucleus itself had also begun. An important question to physicists was whether the nucleus had a
structure, and what that structure might be. In fact, it has so far turned out that the nucleus is a complicated entity, and even today, it is not fully understood. However, by the early 1930s, a model of the nucleus had been developed that is still useful. According to this model, a nucleus is considered as an aggregate of two types of particles: protons and neutrons. A proton is the nucleus of the simplest atom which is hydrogen. The neutron, whose existence was ascertained only in 1932 by the English physicist James Chadwick, is electrically neutral as its name implies. These two constituents of a nucleus, neutrons and protons, are referred to
collectively as “nucleons.”
According to the passage, in the early twentieth century, physicists ----.
A) were so divided among themselves that they were unable to undertake any research in order to reveal the structure of the nucleus
B) were greatly inspired by the research activities which the English physicist James Chadwick
was involved in

nucleons that they were able finally to understand the true nature of the atom
D) were engaged in the development of the quantum theory while they were also focusing on the study of the nucleus
E) were all seriously interested in the quantum theory as a new scientific development and solely focused on it
