In the first half of the 20th century, acid rain – whether natural or unnatural - was a hidden phenomenon. By the 1950s, however, its effects were becoming apparent to scientists in Scandinavia with the loss of fish from mountain lakes. A network of rainwater monitoring stations was set up across Europe, which very soon proved the existence of acid rain as a result of human activities. Acid rain was also charged with killing vast tracts of forest in Germany. The effects of long-range sulphur pollution were looking so worrying that the issue was placed before the world at the UN Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm in 1972. The outcome was that states are now responsible for ensuring that their activities do not damage the environment of other states. This paved the way for the development of programmes for reducing long-range air pollution. The most important of these was the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution, attended in 1979 by the world's leading industrial nations.

Often, it is claimed that small children who are learning to speak two languages go through a stage of mixing and confusing the two. The use of words from both languages in a single sentence is cited as evidence that the child cannot distinguish between the two languages, but in reality, this is not a sign of confusion. In fact, it has been shown that the use of two languages in one sentence by mature bilinguals reveals a great deal of linguistic skill. It is also true that, while young bilingual children sometimes use words from two languages in the same sentence, they produce far more sentences using only one language. This clearly shows that they are able to keep their languages separate. The question then becomes, in what circumstances do children use words from both languages in the same sentence? They do it only when talking to people that they know can understand both languages and who do not get upset with them for using such sentences. In other words, the social context in which children find themselves determines whether and to what extent they use more than one language in a single sentence. The same happens with bilingual adults; they use words from two languages in the same sentence only in sociolinguistic settings in which it is appropriate.
The passage largely deals with ____.
A) the difficulties children come across in bilingual environment
B) many discussions of the advantages of early bilingualism
C) the effects of using two languages at the same time
D) description of the usage of bilingualism
E) how adults effect kids to use two languages

Genetically modified foods are any types of foods whose genes have been modified by scientists. Most often, crops such as corn, wheat and beans are genetically modified to resist pests and disease. Genetically modified foods may also be modified to resist drought and to increase the crop's yield. The United States produces the highest amount of genetically modified crops in the world, and it has been estimated that approximately 60 to 70 percent of the foods that Americans eat contain at least one genetically modified ingredient. The economic news from Europe was particularly disappointing in the second half of 2002. Moreover, recent surveys from the region imply little prospect of improvement in the near future. Perhaps the most worrying aspect has been the sharp decline in conditions in Germany - the area's largest and most important economy. Domestic demand in Germany is very weak and, with the global economy also struggling, Germany's manufacturers have not been able to export their way out of trouble as they have done in the past. With the economy in such a weak state, it is no surprise then that European stock markets have followed the US stock markets' downturn over the past 6 months. While individual share prices may be lower and market valuations look attractive, the economy does not. Recovery seems some way off and strong equity performance from Europe's markets seems unlikely in 2003.

B) has been roughly the same as that in the US stock markets

Hepatitis A is an enterovirus transmitted by the orofecal route, such as contaminated food. It causes an acute form of hepatitis (inflammation of the liver), does not have a chronic stage, and will not cause any permanent damage to the liver. The patient's immune system makes antibodies against Hepatitis A that confer immunity against future infection. A vaccine is available that will prevent infection from hepatitis A for life. Young children who catch hepatitis A often have a milder form of the disease, usually lasting from 1-3 weeks, whereas adults tend to experience a much more severe form of the disease. They are often confined to bed and minimal activity for about 4 weeks and have to stop their work for from one to three months or longer. Many adults take up to 6-12 months and occasionally longer to recover entirely. Symptoms that may be experienced after the first month or two are low immunity: It is much easier to catch minor infections and for these infections to linger longer than they normally would. Many people experience a slow but sure improvement, over this later period. They are generally able to function fairly normally, still needing more sleep and reduced athletic activity. It is common for recovering patients to experience occasional 'off' days, during which they need to rest more. There is no specific treatment for Hepatitis A. Sufferers are advised to rest, avoid fatty foods and alcohol (these may be poorly tolerated for some additional months during the recovery phase and cause minor relapses), eat a well-balanced diet, and stay hydrated.
It is clearly stated in the passage that ...............
A) antibodies are the bacteria found in contaminated food
B) antibodies have a vital role in fighting Hepatitis A
C) the scientists are still trying to find the vaccine against Hepatitis A
D) the vaccine of Hepatitis A provides only a short-term prevention
E) older children are affected by Hepatitis A less severely
